Thandiwe Newton is adding another dark and captivating role to her repertoire. The award-winning actress is officially joining the cast of Netflix’s hit series, Wednesday, for its upcoming second season.
While details about her character are shrouded in mystery (much like Wednesday herself), Newton isn’t the only exciting addition to the Nevermore Academy family. We previously reported that Steve Buscemi will also be gracing the screen in Season 2.
Netflix remained tight-lipped, declining to comment on the casting news.
Newton is no stranger to captivating audiences on the small screen. Her most notable role might be in HBO’s Westworld, where she delivered powerhouse performances that earned her three Emmy nominations for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series, even taking home the award in 2018. Beyond Westworld, her diverse filmography includes shows like The Slap, Big Mouth, Human Resources, and Rogue.
Movie buffs will recognize Newton from prominent films like Crash, Beloved, The Pursuit of Happyness, and W.
The plot for Wednesday’s second season is still under wraps, with only a few things confirmed. Jenna Ortega will be back, reprising her role as the iconic Wednesday Addams navigating the treacherous waters of teenage life. Season 1 ended with Wednesday solving a string of gruesome murders and saving Nevermore Academy from destruction.
Debuting in November 2022, Wednesday quickly became a phenomenon for Netflix. It holds a place among the streamer’s most-watched shows and even garnered a whopping 12 Emmy nominations, winning four. While production for Season 2 faced delays due to the 2023 Hollywood strikes, filming is expected to kick off in Ireland later this month. The series is the brainchild of creators and co-showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar. Tim Burton, who directed the first four episodes of Season 1, also serves as an executive producer.
